Last night I became aware of an incredible reality that happens in human relationships.
Mary and I were sitting on the couch eating our supper. I was really looking forward to this meal as we settled in next to each other. However, even though it looked like the same meal as we had the night before, it was not. Mary had changed the spices. I expected wonderful tasting meal like the night before and was not pleased with the taste of this meal.
Mary sensed my disappointment and asked how the meal was since I was silent while eating. I usually am quite exuberant when the meal tastes super to me.
“It doesn’t taste the same as last night’s meal,” I said.
“I put some different spices in it, thinking that you would like it,” she said with sadness and a tinge of hurt in her voice. She felt disappointed with my reaction to the meal and said that she was feeling sorry for herself because I was not appreciating it.
I realized now more than ever that Mary was very aware of my feelings even before I said anything. She was able to feel my feelings in herself, even when they were not directed towards her.
After reflecting on this, I recall hearing about mothers being able to sense/feel how the children were feeling as they came in from school. I immediately became aware of the oneness that exists in the world. People are able to sense and maybe even experientially feel the feelings of others, especially those in close relationship with each other. This means that it is possible for people to know what another might be thinking of us by just being aware of the feelings that they are experiencing emanating from the other.
Modern psychology calls this sensing skill the awareness of the non-verbal signs that another is making. However, quantum physics and yoga say that there is an energy field around us and we can become aware of that field. We can feel another’s energy field without even looking at the other. We can know what another may be thinking without even seeing the nonverbals. This skill becomes a hindrance because sometimes we don’t want to know what is going on in another or don’t want to know what the other thinks of us, but just want to act as we wish without censuring or absorbing another’s presence or reality.
In any case, we can’t really hide what is going on our lives because there is a oneness in reality that can actually be experienced. Humans in relationship with other humans are one! We can’t separate our feelings, thoughts and person from others, especially those close to us. We are one with all others.
I pray to the divinity within you!
